BAMoff Performing Arts: Greta and I
Fall at BAM is about change and launches a strong message for the planet using the theatre’s language. With this BAMOff, BAM is bringing a show written and played by Arianna Sain, holder of a diploma from the Civica Scuola di Teatro Paolo Grassi, to Volvo Studio Milano to reflect on the pressing questions of our day.
“A young 30-year-old woman apprehensively waits for the result of the pregnancy test she just carried out in the intimacy of her bathroom. Next to her is the life-size silhouette of Greta Thunberg. A heroine of her generation and an imaginary friend, Greta is the only one with whom the woman feels she can confide her doubts and fears. What emerges from this flow of thoughts is an unconscious tormented by existential anxiety and the prospect of an overall black and hopeless future. Under some aspects, everyday life has become easier in practical terms, but more difficult to face emotionally. An endless situation of social stress seems to lead to a generalised apathy. Is the decision to bring a child into the world in a situation like this one too weighty and chancy? The comparison between generations – that of the mother and that of the grandmother – makes it obvious that social changes have influenced the idea of parenthood and individual responsibility. Many current affairs emerge from this tangle of thoughts: ecology, our relationship with the new technologies, LGBTQ+ rights, economic and social inequalities, topics before which the main character feels defenceless, unlike her alter-ego Greta, the icon and social symbol who seems to energetically tackle every situation and come out the winner”.
