The Voice of BAM’s Trees

The Voice of BAM’s Trees

Did you know that there is a sensor that analyses, in real time, the CO2 absorbed by each tree and the pollutants removed from the atmosphere on 250 BAM trees?

A new project to monitor BAM’s trees started in April. Carried out in collaboration with Prospettiva Terra, it involves 250 IoT sensors developed by the neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso and PNAT, a University of Florence start-up, positioned on our trees for the next 12 months.

The data of the absorbed CO2, removed fine particles (PM, CO, NO2) and stability of the trees will be obtained by these sensors in real time.

BAM is the first Botanical Partner of the project, and the first park in Milan where the sensors are applied.

The early data obtained will be published on BAM’s website, but we have already learned from these first few days that our trees have stored up 101 tonnes of CO2 and have removed 570 grams of harmful substances.

The improvement in the air quality generated by the park’s trees can reach peaks of 25-30%. That’s nothing new for us, but it’s important to always remember it!

On 3 April, in the presence of the Councilwoman for the Environment Elena Maria Grandi, BAM, Fondazione Riccardo Catella and the founding companies, with all the partners of the project, signed the manifest presented by Stefano Mancuso to sanction the commitment to adopt a new perspective that promotes solidarity and mutual support between different organisations as a driving force of progress.

If public institutions, cultural organisations, private companies and citizens were to share these principles, cities around the world could be directed toward a more widespread awareness of the emergency that they must be able to meet and the role that plants might play in carrying out projects oriented at the well-being of every living being.

BAM’s everyday commitment is to make the park’s more than 500 trees grow in good health and to promote continuous attention to environmental education, in line with the goals set out in the UN’s 2030 Agenda in order to achieve, also through BAM’s cultural programme, the promotion and development of practices to protect the Planet and Society.

If you want to know more about the environmental education topics BAM Community Days discusses every first Sunday of the month, discover the calendar here.
